British Columbia Premier David Eby expressed support for retaliatory measures in response to the escalating trade dispute with the United States. However, he emphasized the importance of exploring alternative actions beyond tariffs to counter the American levies.

President Donald Trump imposed significant tariffs, including on Canadian goods like pulp and paper products, appliances, and dairy items. In retaliation, Canada announced its own tariffs, set to take effect on September 8. Given British Columbia’s vulnerability to the new U.S. tariffs, Eby welcomed the federal government’s decision to implement dollar-for-dollar retaliatory tariffs.

During a press conference in Vancouver, Eby recommended that Prime Minister Mark Carney consider non-tariff solutions as the trade conflict intensifies. He suggested reevaluating the planned purchase of fighter jets from the U.S., which could involve substantial financial implications.

Eby also highlighted the export of American thermal coal from a Metro Vancouver port, urging Ottawa to hasten its phase-out. He referenced former B.C. Conservative leader John Rustad’s proposal to levy U.S. thermal coal shipments as a means to influence White House tariff decisions.

Encouraging local support amidst the trade tensions, Eby urged British Columbians to prioritize domestic products over American alternatives. He emphasized the importance of unity with the federal government to address the unwarranted attack on Canada and British Columbia.

The Canadian retaliatory tariffs will target the same products as those hit by the U.S. administration with Section 338 and 232 tariffs. A detailed list of over 700 affected goods can be found online.

Eby praised the federal government’s initial steps to aid Canadian workers but stressed the necessity of clear plans for employment insurance support and loans for small and medium-sized enterprises. The B.C. Federation of Labour echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding jobs during any government assistance to businesses.
