A recent WorkSafeBC report obtained through a freedom of information request has exposed that the operator of a Sandman Hotel in Williams Lake had violated asbestos regulations more than twelve times across various locations in British Columbia. The report highlights the $624,051.48 penalty imposed on Northland Properties for failing to ensure worker safety during a renovation project at the Williams Lake hotel in December 2025.

During an inspection, a WorkSafeBC inspector at the site observed visible mold on the walls, lack of decontamination measures, and only one worker wearing a disposable dust mask voluntarily. Despite prior knowledge of asbestos presence in drywall compound and lead-containing paint throughout the hotel, the risks were not communicated to employees as per the pre-construction report.

The report stated that due to these lapses, individuals in the renovation area were likely exposed to asbestos and other hazardous materials. Cross-contamination within the hotel was also probable, with contaminated debris potentially spreading to other areas through footwear and clothing.

Following the inspection, WorkSafeBC issued a stop-work order, prompting the hotel operator to initiate asbestos abatement before resuming renovations. The workplace regulator criticized Northland for failing to demonstrate due diligence in ensuring asbestos safety and compliance with worker safety regulations.

The report highlighted the confirmed carcinogenic nature of asbestos and lead, indicating potential exposure of hotel workers and guests to asbestos fibers during the prolonged renovation project. Despite possessing a hazardous materials survey indicating asbestos presence, the employer did not take appropriate action, thus risking worker exposure to a known carcinogen.

Citing multiple previous violations related to asbestos, WorkSafeBC fined Northland over $620,000, referencing past penalties, stop-work orders, and safety notices issued at various Sandman Hotel locations across British Columbia. The regulator deemed the penalty fitting due to the employer’s history of non-compliance and lack of substantial action to prevent future violations.

Northland Properties, headquartered in Vancouver, operates several hospitality brands, including Denny’s Canada, Grouse Mountain Resort, and Chop Steakhouse. The company, led by CEO Tom Gaglardi, also owns the NHL’s Dallas Stars.

Northland responded by stating that no guests were exposed to asbestos or hazardous materials and has requested a review of the administrative penalty from WorkSafeBC. The company emphasized its commitment to prioritizing the health and safety of all staff and guests, promptly addressing the identified issues raised by WorkSafeBC.
