Marcus Ericsson secured a win at the debut Ontario Honda Dealers Indy in Markham with two crucial passes. Initially, Ericsson and teammate Will Power had a minor collision as Ericsson overtook Power late in the race. Subsequently, Ericsson overtook Romain Grosjean with four laps remaining to claim his fifth IndyCar victory, emphasizing their superior pace.
Expressing his satisfaction, Ericsson attributed the win to their exceptional car performance and strategic gameplay. Grosjean finished second, achieving his first top-five finish of the season, while Power came in third, and Alex Palou, the current driver rankings leader, settled for fourth place.
The Andretti Global team, comprising Ericsson, Power, and Kyle Kirkwood, who holds the second position in the driver rankings, collaborated to thwart Palou’s advancements after Kirkwood’s crash in the 53rd lap. Team principal Ron Ruzewski highlighted the team’s focus on minimizing Palou’s points lead to keep Kirkwood in contention for the championship.
Despite a minor miscommunication leading to a brief incident between Power and Ericsson during the race, the team successfully executed their strategy. Palou earned 32 points, extending his lead over Kirkwood to 133 points in the standings.
Grosjean, who has yet to secure an IndyCar win since transitioning from Formula One in 2021, struggled to defend against Ericsson’s charge due to fuel and tire degradation. Ericsson, capitalizing on his advantages, managed to overtake Grosjean amidst the challenging conditions.
Louis Foster claimed the pole position after being the fastest in practice and qualifying but suffered an early crash on race day. The event saw multiple caution periods and several cars forced out of the race due to collisions, with only 14 cars completing the race out of the 25 starters.
Markham hosted the IndyCar race for the first time, moving from Toronto’s Exhibition Place after 35 years. Despite initial challenges with the track’s completion, the drivers praised the circuit’s layout and the enthusiastic fan turnout, anticipating a smoother event in the future.
