In Gaza City, members of the Al-Drimli family are engaged in the arduous task of searching for the remains of a neighbor amidst the rubble of their demolished home. Equipped with basic tools like shovels, buckets, and a wheelbarrow, they toil silently under the scorching sun, surrounded by the echoes of clanging shovels and the hum of an electric saw.
The family had already retrieved the bodies of their own loved ones from the wreckage and is now focused on finding their missing neighbor, who was present when the building was struck by an airstrike back in November 2023. The Gaza Health Ministry estimates that thousands of bodies, ranging from 8,000 to 10,000, still lie buried beneath the rubble nearly three years after the conflict between Israel and Hamas began.
Due to a scarcity of excavators in Gaza, many Palestinians, including the Al-Drimli family, are compelled to rely on manual labor to sift through the debris in search of their deceased relatives. Ayman Al-Drimli highlighted the challenges they face, citing the exorbitant costs and unavailability of heavy equipment in the region.
The limited availability of functional excavators in Gaza has hindered recovery efforts. Samir Sabra and his son, Uday Sabra, who operate two of the few remaining excavators in the area, struggle with maintenance costs and scarcity of essential resources like oil and spare parts. They express their inability to meet the high demand for their services due to these constraints.
The ongoing shortage of heavy machinery in Gaza is attributed to the deliberate targeting of such equipment during the conflict, as confirmed by Mahmoud Basal, a spokesperson for the Palestinian Civil Defence. Despite ceasefire agreements aiming to facilitate the entry of vital equipment for recovery operations, the situation on the ground remains unchanged, prolonging the painstaking process of retrieving bodies from the rubble.
Border restrictions imposed by Israel on essential supplies like fuel, oil, and spare parts further exacerbate the challenges faced by humanitarian groups and frontline responders in Gaza. Efforts to access heavy equipment for debris clearance and recovery operations are hampered by these restrictions, prompting calls for international intervention to alleviate the crisis.
