FIFA’s President, Gianni Infantino, has confirmed his intention to seek re-election, according to the global soccer governing body. Infantino has been under scrutiny for his unsuccessful proposal to sell shares in the World Cup. Despite mounting calls for his resignation, FIFA announced that Infantino aims to secure a fourth and final term until 2031.
“The decision for Mr. Infantino to run for re-election in 2027 remains unchanged from his announcement in April. He is determined to seek re-election,” stated a FIFA spokesperson. The European soccer authority, UEFA, has been vocal in demanding Infantino’s exit, citing a loss of trust and even considering boycotting FIFA events, including the World Cup. Several national football associations, like the English FA, have withdrawn their backing for Infantino’s re-election bid.
Infantino refrained from discussing his future at the start of the Under-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland last Saturday. FIFA has acknowledged mistakes in its controversial plan to commercialize World Cup revenues and has promised to prevent such errors in the future. However, these actions have not alleviated the pressure on Infantino’s leadership.
The deadline for candidates to join the upcoming presidential race is November 18, exactly four months before the election. Infantino mentioned that there will be an appropriate time and place to address concerns but emphasized enjoying football at the moment.
