Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister announced that five high-ranking Iranian officials are facing sanctions for their actions in the Strait of Hormuz, which are deemed to disrupt global peace. The minister emphasized the importance of free navigation in the strait for global trade and energy security. The sanctioned individuals, including members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), have been targeted for their activities that jeopardize international waterway security.
The sanctioned officials include Ali Abdollahi, Lt.-Col. Ebrahim Zolfaghari, Ebrahim Azizi, Shahram Irani, and Hamid Hosseini. With these recent sanctions, Canada has now imposed sanctions on a total of 232 individuals and 260 entities within Iran’s security, intelligence, and economic sectors.
The sanctions are part of efforts to pressure for an end to the conflict between the U.S., Israel, and Iran, as a peace agreement remains elusive since the war began in February. The ongoing tensions have led to disruptions in the vital global oil shipping route, with Iran attempting to control the strait. International efforts, including Canada’s commitment to contribute to reopening the strait, have been made to address the situation.
Despite President Trump’s claims of progress in defeating Iran’s military capabilities, the conflict persists, impacting global oil supply and causing economic strain.
