In Michigan, a contentious Democratic Senate primary is unfolding, serving as a battleground over money in politics, the influence of the pro-Israel lobby, and the direction of U.S.-Israel relations within the party. Congresswoman Haley Stevens, a four-term incumbent, and her challenger, Abdul El-Sayed, a progressive public health official endorsed by Sen. Bernie Sanders, have clashed on various issues like health care and immigration enforcement. However, campaign finances and foreign policy have emerged as significant points of contention.

Notably, over $60 million has been spent supporting Stevens, with a record-breaking $30 million coming from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) and its affiliated groups. This significant financial backing has sparked debate within the Democratic Party, with contrasting views on AIPAC’s role and influence. While some still view AIPAC support as positive, especially among Stevens’ supporters, others, particularly in the party’s liberal base, now consider it controversial in light of recent events like the Israel-Hamas conflict.

The candidates’ stances on the U.S.-Israel relationship further highlight their differences. Stevens, a staunch Israel supporter, advocates for a two-state solution and has downplayed accusations of genocide in Gaza. In contrast, El-Sayed calls for an end to unconditional military aid to Israel, labeling it a “rogue state” and condemning alleged atrocities in Gaza. El-Sayed also criticizes the influence of big money in politics, aligning with his broader platform for economic and political reform.

The primary race has drawn attention to AIPAC’s involvement in shaping political outcomes beyond Michigan, reflecting broader shifts in Democratic Party dynamics. While the impact of AIPAC’s spending on voter sentiments remains debated, analysts suggest that the Michigan primary could signal future directions for the party, especially regarding foreign policy and establishment politics. The outcome of the race is seen as having far-reaching implications beyond the state, potentially shaping the trajectory of progressive movements and party dynamics at a national level.
