The Canadian Elite Basketball League has reverted to a single-game championship format following a decision made on Wednesday evening. The best-of-three final between the Winnipeg Sea Bears and hometown Brampton Honey Badgers was abruptly halted and canceled due to unsafe playing conditions caused by court condensation. The league emphasized prioritizing the safety of players, officials, and fans.
Brampton initially took a 6-0 lead in the final game, but the match was interrupted when Xavier Moon of the Sea Bears slipped on the court. As a result, the league opted for a single-game final on Saturday in Winnipeg, replacing the previously planned multi-game championship series.
The Honey Badgers had won the two previous encounters against the Sea Bears this season. Honey Badgers CEO Al Whitley expressed regret over the game’s cancellation. Winnipeg, with an impressive playoff run, is now just one victory away from clinching their first championship title.
In the playoffs, the Sea Bears defeated the Saskatoon Mamba and later stunned the Vancouver Bandits in the West final. On the other hand, the Honey Badgers secured their spot in the final by overcoming the Ottawa BlackJacks and the Niagara River Lions. The championship game will also feature an intriguing off-court narrative, with both teams owned by the Asper siblings.
The CEBL Finals will be broadcast live on various platforms, including CBC-TV, CBCSports.ca, and CBC Gem. The decision to switch back to a single-game championship aligns with the format used in previous years.
