After experiencing several days of interruptions, operations at Wabush Airport are set to recommence on Wednesday, confirmed by PAL Airlines. Transport Canada had announced earlier that flights were canceled due to the airport’s failure to meet federal firefighting and rescue standards for commercial flights with over 19 passengers. This deficiency was attributed to a mechanical issue with a specific vehicle.

In a social media update on Wednesday afternoon, PAL Airlines, the airline responsible for flights to and from the Labrador west airport, stated that the necessary firefighting equipment for passenger flights has been reinstated. Flights numbered 921, 922, 833, and 834 to and from the airport will resume on Wednesday. Affected passengers will receive updated travel details from the reservations team regarding their flight arrangements.

Before the flights resumed on Wednesday, Labrador’s Member of Parliament expressed frustration over the repeated disruptions at the airport. Despite this, he remained optimistic that the latest issue would be swiftly resolved. He emphasized the unreasonable burden placed on the people of Labrador due to the ongoing disruptions.

The airport had faced challenges in the past year, including a temporary shutdown in October 2025 due to revised firefighting service requirements and disruptions caused by extreme weather in December. Additionally, in January of this year, restrictions were imposed on the airport’s centerline, affecting certain aircraft landings.

PAL Airlines mentioned on its Facebook page that it facilitated a charter flight to deliver the required parts to Wabush and is actively collaborating with airport and government officials to restore commercial service promptly.

Chris Bussey, co-founder of Advocates for Safer Airports in Canada, raised concerns about the broader emergency response capabilities at Canadian airports, emphasizing the importance of adequate resources and maintenance plans. He highlighted the necessity of proper firefighting equipment at airports for emergency situations.

Bussey’s organization is engaging with stakeholders, politicians, and pilot associations to address concerns surrounding emergency response preparedness at airports. The overall goal is to ensure readiness in the event of any unforeseen emergencies.
