Former Miss Universe Canada winner Ashley Callingbull brought attention to cultural appropriation during the 2026 Miss Universe Canada pageant she was hosting. At the event, just before the announcement of the top 20 contestants, Callingbull addressed the audience regarding the issue. During the national pageantry costume competition in Windsor on August 4, several contestants showcased outfits that were criticized for cultural insensitivity. One contestant wore a feathered headdress and a red handprint on her cheek, while another donned an “Arctic Beauty” costume with braids, mukluks, and a maple leaf design.
Callingbull expressed shock and disappointment at the choice of costumes, particularly noting the sacred significance of headdresses in First Nations culture. She emphasized the need for respect and proper representation of Indigenous traditions.
Following the incident, Miss Universe Canada issued a statement expressing regret for any offense caused and announced plans to implement guidelines for future pageants to prevent cultural appropriation. Callingbull was designated as a cultural liaison to ensure proper representation moving forward.
Emma Morrison, Miss World Canada 2022, also criticized the costumes as culturally inappropriate and highlighted the need for increased Indigenous education to prevent such incidents in the future. She emphasized the importance of respectful representation of Indigenous cultures.
Both contestants involved in the controversy, Karisa Haverkamp and Jasleen Kaily, issued statements acknowledging the hurt caused and expressing their commitment to learning and respecting Indigenous cultures. Kaily explained that she had good intentions but lacked clarity on the appropriateness of her costume.
