Recently, I explored Vancouver Community College’s auto shop to delve into their approach to educating apprentices on electric vehicles. This visit sparked my curiosity about the training of future automotive technicians.

This week’s highlights include the growing presence of electric vehicles (EVs) on the roads, raising questions about the availability of skilled mechanics to maintain them. Additionally, a significant development in battery technology and an innovative alternative to fireworks using drone shows were featured.

With the push for EVs to represent 75% of new vehicle sales in Canada by 2035 to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, the demand for electric school buses and other EVs is on the rise. However, a recent report by Pollution Probe identified deficiencies in training and certification for technicians to service electric school buses, pointing to gaps in high-voltage safety, battery diagnostics, and charging infrastructure management skills.

The lack of standardized training poses challenges for the automotive industry, as manufacturers handle most of the EV technician training. To address these gaps, initiatives like NAPA’s Next Drive program are equipping technicians with the necessary skills to service EVs efficiently. Similarly, colleges like Vancouver Community College and Centennial College are expanding their clean energy programs to meet the demand for EV repairs.

While the transition to EVs presents hurdles, industry experts emphasize the importance of integrating EV content into trade curricula and providing ongoing training opportunities for technicians. These efforts aim to bridge the skills gap and support the sustainable growth of the EV industry.

Overall, the shift towards EVs necessitates a concerted effort to equip technicians with the specialized skills required to maintain and repair these vehicles effectively. By investing in training programs and updating curricula, the automotive industry can meet the rising demand for EV services and contribute to a greener future.
