Anusuya Datta, a writer and journalist residing in Saskatoon, shares her personal experience of finding a place to call home in Canada. Despite the absence of snow during the early December holiday lights installation, she felt a deep connection to their new house. The abundance of windows allowing sunlight to fill every room instantly made it feel like home for her, her husband, and their teenager.

Their new home, with its simplicity, coziness, front lawn, backyard with swaying poplar trees, and ample natural light pouring in through the windows, captured their hearts. It wasn’t extravagant, large, or small; it was just perfect. The moment they laid eyes on it, they knew it was meant to be.

Reflecting on her childhood memories in India, Anusuya draws parallels between her current home and the one she grew up in, filled with nature and cherished moments. The transition from their previous home in Delhi to renting in Saskatoon brought about feelings of impermanence and detachment, further emphasized by the impersonal nature of their rental apartment.

The challenges of moving during the COVID-19 pandemic and the uncertainties that followed led them to purchase their current home in September. Now, settled in their new abode, they see it as more than just a physical structure; it symbolizes a fresh chapter in their lives. The house has become a place where they can create new memories, mark milestones, and establish roots in a once unfamiliar land that has now become their true home.

Saskatoon has transformed from a mere location on the map to a beacon of hope for their family. It has taught them that home is not solely about where you come from but also about where you choose to build your life.
