A new snake species discovered in the jungle has been named after rock legend Slash. The non-venomous groundsnake from New Guinea is officially called Lielaphis slashi, in tribute to the Guns N’ Roses guitarist. Measuring about 71 centimeters, the reddish-brown reptile is now known as Slash’s groundsnake.

Slash, known for his love of reptiles, was honored by this recognition. Described as a lifelong reptile enthusiast and a strong supporter of zoos and museums by the Field Museum, Slash expressed his excitement and gratitude for having a snake named after him.

The discovery was made by scientists from the Field Museum in Chicago, with Sara Ruane, the museum’s associate curator of herpetology, leading the research. Ruane, who had an early interest in reptiles, recalled being inspired by Slash holding a pet snake in a magazine cover. Naming a snake after Slash had been a dream for her, and she found it fulfilling to finally do so.

The study, published in Zootaxa, detailed the identification of the new species. Slash’s groundsnake was first encountered in 2006 during fieldwork in New Guinea, an island known for its rich biodiversity. The snake’s genetic distinctiveness within its genus was confirmed through genetic testing.

Despite its name association with a rock star, Slash’s groundsnake poses no threat to humans. It is believed to feed on small lizards and reptile eggs using its enlarged teeth, without squeezing its prey like a boa constrictor or producing harmful venom. However, the species is facing habitat threats from activities such as coffee farming and mining.

Ruane emphasized that naming the snake after Slash was not only a tribute but also a way to raise awareness about the ecosystem where the species resides. The conservation of these forests is crucial, as they are still not fully understood by scientists.

In conclusion, while Guns N’ Roses may have had a wild reputation in the music world, Slash’s groundsnake is a peaceful inhabitant of New Guinea, adding a unique touch to the realm of rock and roll-inspired names in the animal kingdom.
