Nearly four years ago, Sokvin Vann found herself stuck in a rut in her life. Encouraged by her brother, she channeled her love for K-pop and the globally renowned boy band, BTS, into creating BTS Army Toronto. This local fan club, named after the broader BTS fan base known as the “army,” organizes events and meet-ups to unite fans through their shared passion for the South Korean band.

Tragically, Vann’s brother passed away shortly after she established BTS Army Toronto. Despite her grief, the 43-year-old persevered and expanded the organization into a vibrant community that hosts numerous fans at gatherings, arranges giveaways and fundraisers, and advocates for local Korean businesses.

As BTS prepares to make their highly anticipated return to Toronto after more than a decade, Vann, along with her 24-year-old son Jordan Vann and a dedicated team of about 10 individuals, is getting the fan club ready for the upcoming events.

Reflecting on her journey, Vann expressed, “I initiated this for the community, but unexpectedly, it has returned to me manifold. This community has forged friendships that seemed unimaginable. People have entered your life who truly understand your passion, love for music, and bring a sense of fulfillment.”

BTS, as part of their Arirang World Tour, is set to deliver sold-out performances at Rogers Stadium on Saturday and Sunday. The K-pop sensation, known for hits like “Swim,” “Permission to Dance,” and “Butter,” will entertain around 100,000 fans over the course of two nights.

The BTS Army, characterized by its ardent followers with deep knowledge of the band’s history, members, and music catalog, eagerly awaits the group’s performance in Toronto. The community’s devotion stems from BTS’s music, which touches on themes such as mental health, self-love, personal challenges, and growth.

Prior to this tour, BTS had been on hiatus as its seven members fulfilled mandatory military service obligations. The tour, spanning 88 shows in 34 cities across 23 countries until March 2027, designates the North Toronto outdoor venue as the only Canadian stop.

Since their debut in 2013, BTS has evolved from underdogs to global icons. The group’s album “ARIRANG,” the foundation of their current tour, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart in the U.S., selling 641,000 equivalent album units in a week, marking a significant milestone in group album sales.

Toronto fans eagerly anticipate the weekend shows, with Aira Uy sharing her excitement for the upcoming performance. The City of Toronto has also embraced BTS’s return by temporarily renaming a section of Yonge Street as “BTS Boulevard.” Additionally, a surge of fans has been visiting the official BTS merchandise store on Bloor Street, snapping up popular items like T-shirts, hats, and albums.

As the concert anticipation builds, Vann’s BTS Army Toronto will be actively involved in the Toronto Korean Festival, offering a booth with photo opportunities and a craft station. Furthermore, Vann plans to provide a Toronto guide on the organization’s Instagram account to assist visiting fans in navigating the city.

Looking ahead to the concerts, Vann is eager to experience the intimate setting at Rogers Stadium with BTS’s unique in-the-round stage setup. She is particularly excited to see which surprise song the group will perform in Toronto, a special element of their tour that fans greatly anticipate.

Ultimately, Vann looks forward to immersing herself in the exceptional concert experience alongside the BTS community, cherishing the connection and gratitude that the shared experience brings to fans.
