The Royal Canadian Mounted Police announced on Monday that a 51-year-old individual from Montreal has been taken into custody for allegedly issuing death threats against Prime Minister Mark Carney. Identified as Marc-André Porlier, the man faces charges of making threats to cause death or bodily harm, as detailed in an RCMP press release.
According to authorities, the purported threats were transmitted via email to multiple undisclosed recipients, which reportedly included a senator. The accused is also said to have menaced “all Canadian police officers,” as indicated in the formal charge document.
Police verified that Porlier had previously been convicted of arson and mischief for setting fire to a church in Toronto back in 2017. The suspect was serving probation for those offenses, as noted by an RCMP spokesperson who spoke to CBC News.
Porlier was brought before the court on Saturday, as outlined in the news release. It is emphasized that the charges laid against him remain unproven in court.
