Céline Dion is gearing up for her upcoming five-week residency in Paris, providing more insight into her health condition and the treatment she has undergone. The renowned Canadian singer shared in an exclusive interview with Harper’s Bazaar that she had been experiencing symptoms of stiff person syndrome for 17 years before receiving a formal diagnosis in 2022 for the rare neurological autoimmune disorder.

The discomfort, which intensified in 2020, was so debilitating that on certain days, she struggled to walk, often requiring a high dosage of Valium for relief. Stiff person syndrome is a progressive ailment that tends to worsen over time and affects a very small percentage of the population. Its symptoms include muscle stiffness and painful spasms triggered by stress, loud noises, or sudden movements. While the disorder lacks a definitive cause and an approved treatment, various therapies can help manage the symptoms.

Prior to her diagnosis, when Dion had to cancel performances, she would attribute it to reasons like a cough or sinus infection, concealing the true extent of her suffering. Despite feeling like she was deceiving her fans, whose unwavering support enabled her to seek extensive treatment, Dion acknowledged their contribution by stating, “They paid for tickets. They bought my records. They gave me that luxury.”

Following her diagnosis, Dion had to cancel all her remaining shows and has not performed publicly since the 2024 Paris Olympics. Nevertheless, she is set to make a comeback to the stage in September. Dion has been diligently following a rigorous recovery routine involving medication, physical therapy, vocal therapy, and immunotherapy. Additionally, she has been engaging in 90-minute Pilates sessions thrice a week and ballet classes twice a week in preparation for her upcoming performances.

Described as constantly active and hesitant to remain idle for long periods, fearing a recurrence of symptoms, Dion views her recovery and the opportunity to perform again as a remarkable gift that she deeply appreciates. Feeling strong, excited, and slightly nervous, she is eager to return. Her residency in Paris will comprise 26 concerts scheduled between September 12 and May 29 next year.
