Nick Reiner, accused of murdering his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, has been blocked from accessing the $1.5 million US trust fund intended for his legal defense. In a recent filing, Reiner sought unpaid funds from a trust established by his parents in 1993 but was denied by trustees citing the “slayer statute” in California law, which prohibits individuals who have intentionally killed someone from inheriting money or property. Rob Reiner, a renowned director and actor, and his wife Michele were fatally stabbed at their California home on Dec. 14, 2025, with their son Nick being arrested shortly after. Nick, aged 32, has been charged with murder and pled not guilty.

An indictment by a Los Angeles County grand jury revealed that Reiner allegedly ambushed his parents, potentially making him eligible for the death penalty, pending the decision of District Attorney Nathan Hochman. Reiner is set for a pretrial hearing in September and is currently represented by public defender Kimberly Greene.

The filing disclosed that apart from the main family trust fund, individual trust funds were established for the Reiner children, with Nick entitled to half at 30 and the remainder at 35. Claiming he never received his share at 30, Reiner alleged that the trustees wrongfully withheld his funds. The trust fund amounted to at least $1.5 million US, as stated in the petition.

Nick’s legal representation shifted after private lawyer Alan Jackson withdrew within a month, with siblings Jake and Romy Reiner initially agreeing to cover Nick’s legal fees before changing their minds. Jackson expressed willingness to rejoin the case if funds were available. The trust fund remains inaccessible pending the outcome of the criminal case and application of the “slayer statute” principles.

With many details of the case undisclosed and no motives speculated by authorities eight months post the incident, Jake Reiner shared his anguish over the tragic loss of his parents and the scrutiny surrounding his brother in an emotional statement. Rob Reiner, known for his iconic contributions to Hollywood, shared a lasting legacy in the film industry, having met Michele during the filming of “When Harry Met Sally” and enjoying a 36-year marriage.
