Canadian director Matt Johnson appeared calm and composed just four days before his wedding and eight days ahead of filming his upcoming movie. Johnson, casually dressed in a T-shirt and sweatpants, discussed “Tony,” a biopic centered on the early life of renowned chef and TV personality Anthony Bourdain, with CBC News at Toronto’s Revue Cinema. Despite Bourdain’s posthumous fame following his tragic death in 2018, Johnson expressed ease in portraying his story.

Johnson initially had no intention of making a film about Bourdain but changed his mind after meeting actor Dominic Sessa, who plays the lead role in the movie. The film, inspired by Bourdain’s book “Kitchen Confidential,” focuses on one summer in Provincetown, Mass., where the chef worked for the first time. By concentrating on Bourdain’s youth, Johnson sidestepped the pressure of depicting the older, more established figure that many fans idolize.

Sessa, 23, was cast as the young Bourdain, and Johnson deliberately kept him unfamiliar with Bourdain’s work to maintain authenticity in his portrayal. The film delves into the complexities of Bourdain’s upbringing, his relationships, and his transition into adulthood, offering a narrative that resonates with young audiences.

“Tony” is set to premiere in Canadian theaters on Friday, Aug. 14, bringing to life a unique perspective on Anthony Bourdain’s early years. The director and lead actor aimed to create a relatable and insightful portrayal that captures the essence of Bourdain’s formative experiences.
