Allegations have surfaced against a French judge at the Winter Olympics regarding potential manipulation of the figure skating results to ensure a gold medal for France. Laurence Fournier Beaudry and Guillaume Cizeron of France claimed the gold with a total score of 225.82, narrowly edging out Team USA’s Madison Chock and Evan Bates by just 1.43 points.
The controversy stems from the revealed scores of French judge Jezabel Dabouis, raising questions about the integrity of the judging process. In ice dance competitions, skaters are required to perform two distinct routines over two days: the rhythm dance and the free dance. Chock and Bates, who had previously clinched three consecutive world championships in the same discipline, were favored to win in Milan.
After the rhythm dance segment, Fournier Beaudry and Cizeron were placed first, while the American duo settled for second. Notably, five judges ranked the French pair highest, with only three placing Chock and Bates at the top, revealing discrepancies among the judges’ assessments.
Of the six judges who awarded the highest score to Fournier Beaudry and Cizeron, five still had Chock and Bates within a 3.5-point range. However, Dabouis notably awarded her compatriots a significant 5.74-point advantage over the American duo, drawing scrutiny to her scoring decisions.
Following the completion of the free dance, five out of nine judges ranked Chock and Bates at the top, yet Dabouis again granted a substantial 7.71-point lead to Fournier Beaudry and Cizeron. Despite some judges favoring the American pair, the scoring discrepancies were evident, prompting the International Skating Union to release a statement in response to the public outcry.
The ISU spokesperson affirmed that variations in judges’ scores are common and measures are implemented to address such discrepancies, expressing confidence in the fairness of the scores provided. Meanwhile, the American skaters shared their emotional journey and pride in their performances, acknowledging the subjective nature of the sport and the impact of judges’ decisions on outcomes.
