Individuals involved in altering vehicles to facilitate the illegal transportation of people, drugs, and weapons into the United Kingdom could be sentenced to up to five years in prison under recently proposed legislation.
Expected to receive Royal Assent imminently, the new law will criminalize the creation of hidden compartments for smugglers to exploit. A spokesperson from the Home Office, speaking to The Mirror, condemned the deplorable tactics used by traffickers to sneak individuals into the country.
In recent cases, eight criminals were collectively sentenced to 20 years in prison after a Vietnamese woman was discovered hidden in a dangerously confined space behind a vehicle’s dashboard. Another incident involved a smuggler who received a 10-year jail term for concealing seven individuals behind a modified panel at the rear of a van.
The discovery of these individuals, prompted by their cries, led to the implementation of stricter sentencing measures under the prospective law. Border Security Minister Alex Norris emphasized the need to combat criminal smuggling gangs that resort to appalling methods like concealing migrants in vehicles.
The Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Bill will outlaw the importation, manufacture, or supply of specialized compartments used in modifying vehicles for human trafficking and serious organized crime activities. These illicit alterations may include fabricating false floors, hidden compartments, or modified objects like hollowed-out fire extinguishers.
Presently, the act of creating concealments in vehicles is not a criminal offense.
Between 2020 and 2023, authorities seized over 430 vehicle concealments, with approximately 150 occurring at border points.
Additionally, the new laws will criminalize the possession or distribution of templates intended for producing 3D-printed firearm components, pill pressers, and pill encapsulators, commonly used in manufacturing drugs such as MDMA.
