A recent significant change in the UK internet landscape has led to a noticeable shift in the usage of Virtual Private Networks (VPNs). The UK regulatory body Ofcom has implemented new regulations requiring individuals to verify their age before accessing adult websites.

The primary aim of this change is to prevent minors from viewing inappropriate content, as statistics from Ofcom reveal that 8% of children aged 8-14 in the UK have visited adult sites.

Ofcom emphasized the importance of this measure in safeguarding children online, stating that it marks a crucial shift in how adults in the UK can access adult content. However, the requirement for users to provide personal information such as names, addresses, and banking details to access adult sites has met with resistance.

Following the update, there has been a surge in VPN usage. VPNs are tools that conceal IP addresses and encrypt online traffic. They can also enable users to appear as if they are browsing from a different country, a feature often utilized for accessing geo-restricted content like the US version of Netflix or UK services such as Sky Go and BBC iPlayer from abroad.

While it remains uncertain whether the Ofcom regulations are directly responsible for the increased VPN adoption, reports indicate a substantial uptick in VPN users since the enforcement of the rules. Proton VPN reported a remarkable 1,400% hourly surge in sign-ups since July 25, coinciding with the implementation of the new regulations.

The growing interest in VPNs is evident from the fact that five VPN services currently rank among the top 10 most downloaded apps in UK app stores. While the Ofcom update serves a critical purpose in enhancing online child safety, there are concerns about users sharing sensitive data with unfamiliar companies.

Jake Moore, Global Cybersecurity Advisor at ESET, highlighted the potential privacy and security risks associated with the Online Safety Act’s age verification requirements. He emphasized the importance of selecting reputable VPN providers and cautioned against using free VPNs that may compromise data security.

Ensuring online safety is paramount, and individuals considering VPN usage should exercise caution and opt for trustworthy services to mitigate potential risks.
