A mother is advocating for mandatory training for individuals handling explosives after her 11-year-old son sustained severe burns while shielding his two-year-old sister from a firework incident near Pontypool, Wales. Following the traumatic event, concerned parent Charlotte Baggot emphasized the importance of businesses selling fireworks providing comprehensive safety guidelines to customers.
Charlotte, a mother of three, highlighted that the accident could have been prevented with proper safety measures in place, stressing the need for individuals to undergo training before organizing public firework displays. Despite Olly’s positive recovery progress, Charlotte expressed her concern over the lack of regulations that could potentially endanger other children in similar situations.
During the Guy Fawkes display in Penygarn on November 5, Olly noticed a stray firework approaching the crowd and swiftly moved to shield his sister, resulting in burns to his neck, fingers, and head. Recalling the harrowing experience, Charlotte described Olly’s heroic actions in protecting his siblings and expressed her admiration for his bravery amidst the frightening ordeal.
Despite missing his performance at the Remembrance Sunday parade, where he was set to play with the Piping Hot Cwmbran bagpipe band, Olly was praised for his courageous act by the ensemble’s spokesperson.
