A prominent horse racing jockey narrowly escaped a fatal accident when her pelvis was severely injured as the horse she was riding collapsed on her. Sonja Logan, in 2023, faced a menacing attack by a group of individuals attempting to steal her vehicle. During the frightening incident, they vandalized her car by throwing a brick through the window and assaulting her with a rock, resulting in a broken nose, a cut lip, and three broken front teeth just three weeks before her scheduled wedding day. The perpetrators fled upon the intervention of others, and their identity remains unknown. Recounting the excruciating experience of being pinned down by a half-ton racehorse, Logan described it as the most intense pain she had ever endured in her life.

Riding Jumping Power Two, a six-year-old gelding trained by her husband Tommy, Logan was in the midst of a race when the horse became agitated by an unknown stimulus. She recounted the moment the horse reared up at the barriers, causing her to fall to the ground with the horse collapsing on top of her, crushing her pelvis and intensifying her agony. Emergency medical assistance was promptly provided, and Logan was transported to Darwin Royal Hospital, where she was stabilized before being transferred to Adelaide Royal Hospital due to the absence of a pelvic surgeon in Darwin. The impact left her with a severe pelvic injury, necessitating the insertion of screws and a plate to aid in her recovery.

Reflecting on the incident, Logan expressed gratitude for narrowly avoiding a more catastrophic outcome, acknowledging the severity of the pain she endured and the fear of potential spinal injuries. Currently, she is recuperating at home with the aid of a walking frame, anticipating a recovery period of six to eight months contingent on the healing process and rehabilitation. Despite the physical and emotional challenges faced, Logan remains resolute in her determination to return to horse riding, a passion she is actively pursuing.

Following a previous traumatic experience involving a carjacking, Logan, a seasoned jockey with 547 victories, made a remarkable comeback to the sport, achieving success in competitions despite battling personal struggles including depression and substance abuse. To overcome her mental health challenges, she transitioned to competitive bodybuilding, finding solace in the discipline and support from her network of well-wishers.

In a statement, Logan emphasized the contrasting emotions between the deliberate assault she endured previously and the unintended harm caused by the horse, expressing her appreciation for the unwavering support of her loved ones, particularly her husband. With a positive outlook and a strong support system, she remains optimistic about her recovery and eventual return to competitive horse racing.
