A judge has approved the release of previously confidential grand jury transcripts related to the Jeffrey Epstein sex trafficking case.

US District Judge Richard M. Berman, along with two other judges, granted the Department of Justice’s (DoJ) request to unseal documents stemming from the 2019 federal investigation into Epstein. This decision overturns Judge Berman’s previous choice to keep the records sealed. The move was influenced by the newly enacted Epstein Files Transparency Act, which mandates the disclosure of all Epstein-linked files by December 19. Judge Berman emphasized the importance of safeguarding the privacy and identities of Epstein’s victims.

Initially, the judge had deemed the approximately 70 pages of grand jury materials as uninformative. However, pressure from Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell’s victims prompted the push for unsealing the files while ensuring protection of their identities and privacy.

In separate court filings from January 2024, notable figures such as former prince Andrew, ex-US president Bill Clinton, and current president Donald Trump were mentioned. Nonetheless, much of the content had already been publicly disclosed. Epstein passed away in a New York prison cell in August 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking allegations.

Judge Berman’s ruling coincides with another judge’s recent decision allowing the DoJ to release grand jury materials linked to Maxwell’s sex trafficking case. Maxwell, convicted in 2021 for her involvement in Epstein’s crimes, is currently serving a 20-year prison term.

Earlier in December, Democratic members of the House Oversight Committee unveiled images of Epstein’s private island in the US Virgin Islands, describing them as offering insight into Epstein’s activities.
