England has pledged to support captain Maro Itoje in the wake of his mother’s tragic passing. Itoje recently revealed the sad news of his mother Florence’s demise in December and has traveled to Nigeria for her funeral.
The 31-year-old rugby forward skipped Saracens’ Premiership game against Newcastle to be with his family in Nigeria. He was also absent from the Six Nations launch in Edinburgh, with his friend Jamie George stepping in for media obligations.
George empathized with Itoje, drawing on his own experience of losing his mother during the Six Nations in 2024. He emphasized the importance of allowing Itoje time to grieve and heal before returning to the team fully committed.
England is set to convene in Girona for a warm-weather training camp before their initial match against Wales at Twickenham on February 7. Itoje will rejoin his teammates in Spain after bidding farewell to his mother, with head coach Steve Borthwick expressing confidence in his readiness for the tournament.
Borthwick acknowledged the emotional challenge Itoje has faced and highlighted the significance of his time in Nigeria in the healing process. He praised Itoje’s growth as a leader and eagerly anticipated his return to the squad.
In an Instagram post, Itoje shared his deep sorrow over his mother’s passing, describing her as his confidant, friend, and guiding light. He expressed gratitude for her impact on his life and sought solace in the belief that she watches over him from above.
