A man expecting a child, who fell into a comatose state after enduring a severe car accident, briefly regained consciousness and accused his pregnant girlfriend of causing his injuries.
Following a collision with a tree on February 9, Daniel Waterman suffered serious injuries, including broken bones, spinal trauma, and punctured lungs, leaving him in a coma.
In a surprising development in May, the 22-year-old managed to communicate with investigators, using a whiteboard to reveal that a heated argument had erupted between him and his partner, Leigha Mumby, due to her pregnancy and jealousy over a text message from a female friend.
According to Daniel’s mother, Heather Waterman, the dispute escalated while driving on Interstate 95 in Flagler County, Florida, with Mumby purportedly driving recklessly and deliberately causing the crash.
Despite Daniel’s attempts to escape the moving vehicle, Mumby allegedly accelerated, leading to the fatal impact. Mumby, who also sustained injuries, denied knowledge of the events leading to the crash, as disclosed by investigators.
While Daniel showed signs of improvement and was transferred to a hospital in Syracuse for further care, his health deteriorated, and he passed away on October 8, succumbing to pneumonia. Mumby now faces charges of vehicular homicide and is detained in Flagler County Jail.
Daniel’s family is seeking custody of his child, pending a paternity test, to ensure the baby’s well-being and honor Daniel’s memory. Mumby has pleaded not guilty to initial charges but awaits trial on the homicide charge.
