Heavy rain from a warm front that struck southern Wales Thursday evening is expected to move northward and intensify gusts through Friday. Known as Storm Claudia by Spain’s meteorological service due to its impact on the Canary Islands, the weather system is forecasted to bring strong winds and heavy rainfall as it progresses northwards.

Caerphilly Council announced the closure of Idris Davies School for students aged three to 18 on Friday due to flooding affecting the school premises and surrounding routes. The decision was made after a comprehensive risk assessment to ensure the safety of students and staff.

Local authorities are advising residents to prepare for Storm Claudia’s effects, with Rhondda Cynon Taff confirming the closure of various services. Amber rain warnings are in place for southern and central England and Wales starting at 6 am Friday, with broader yellow alerts covering a significant portion of the country for wind and rain.

Natural Resources Wales has issued flood alerts for several areas, highlighting regions at risk of flooding. BBC Wales weather presenter Derek Brockway cautioned about potential flooding in eastern facing hills, while Met Office chief meteorologist Matthew Lehnert warned of heavy rainfall leading to possible flooding, particularly in central and southern England and Wales.

Gusty winds are expected in north-west Wales and Cardigan Bay, with gusts reaching 50-70mph. The AA advises against traveling in hazardous weather conditions and emphasizes the importance of safety precautions. Flood water can pose dangers, and drivers are urged to avoid driving through flooded areas.
