Android phones continue to lead the global market due to their affordability, customization options, and wide range of models from various manufacturers. However, the duration of software support varies among devices, creating confusion for users.

For instance, flagship models like the latest Galaxy S26 and Google Pixel phones receive up to seven years of Android and security updates, while older Galaxy A-series devices may only get around four years of support. Some phones from brands like Xiaomi and Motorola are limited to three years of updates.

Although an Android phone will not suddenly become inoperable, it will eventually stop receiving crucial security patches and software upgrades, potentially sooner than expected.

Android updates typically fall into two categories: major Android version updates, which bring new features and enhancements annually, and security updates released throughout the year to address vulnerabilities and safeguard devices.

Many manufacturers, including Samsung and Google, have extended their phone support periods recently, but older devices often do not receive the same level of attention.

To check how much longer your Android phone will be supported, locate your exact model in the Settings menu and visit endoflife.date. This website provides a list of devices, their expected support timelines, and end-of-update schedules, using amber and red indicators to signal impending or reached end-of-support statuses.

Even after reaching end-of-life status, a phone can still handle basic functions like calls and messaging. However, it will no longer receive new features or security enhancements, potentially increasing vulnerability to cyber threats.

Continuing to use an unsupported device, as TechAdvisor points out, poses risks for activities such as online banking, shopping, email access, and password storage, as unaddressed security flaws may be exploited by malware.

It is advisable to check your phone’s update status now to anticipate the end of support and plan for a potential upgrade to a newer device.
