Ukraine’s President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, has highlighted the challenging decision his country faces between safeguarding its dignity and potentially jeopardizing a key partnership by considering the United States’ proposed peace plan. The plan, reportedly influenced by Russian President Vladimir Putin’s desires, suggests Ukrainian territorial compromises alongside limited security assurances.

Zelenskyy emphasized the gravity of the situation in a national address, acknowledging the immense pressure on Ukraine. He expressed willingness to collaborate with the US on their proposed strategy to end the conflict with Russia, which has persisted for nearly four years. However, the potential agreement may involve significant concessions in the Donetsk region controlled by Ukraine.

European leaders, including Germany, France, and the United Kingdom, reassured Zelenskyy of their unwavering support amidst the ongoing conflict with Russia. The leaders welcomed American efforts to resolve the war and emphasized the importance of upholding Ukraine’s sovereignty and ensuring robust security guarantees. They affirmed their commitment to protecting essential European and Ukrainian interests in the long term.

Acknowledging Ukraine’s right to determine its future independently, UK’s Keir Starmer underscored the fundamental principle of sovereignty. European nations view the conflict as crucial to their own security and have stressed the necessity of being consulted in peace negotiations.

EU’s foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas condemned Russia’s aggression against Ukraine as a significant threat to Europe. Emphasizing Ukraine’s right to decide its future, Kallas underscored that any agreement terms should be determined by Ukraine alone.
