A man identified as the Connecticut Cannibal, Tyree Smith, brutally murdered a homeless man named Angel Gonzalez in 2011 by using a hatchet and consuming parts of his brain and eyeball. Smith, who was later deemed not guilty of murder due to insanity, was confined to Whiting Forensic Hospital for 60 years in 2013. Recently, he was granted conditional release by the state’s Psychiatric Security Review Board, citing that his schizophrenia and substance abuse disorders were under control with medication and treatment.

After his release, Smith was placed under supervision in a community setting with strict conditions, including ongoing treatment. Forensic psychiatrist Caren Teitelbaum stated that Smith had been a positive influence on other patients after achieving stability. Despite this, prison documents revealed altercations between Smith and fellow inmates, leading to his segregation at one point.

Angel Gonzalez’s sister-in-law, Talitha Frazier, expressed concern over Smith’s release, believing he still posed a threat to society. Smith offered an apology for Gonzalez’s death in court, attributing his actions to his mental state. Frazier was surprised by Smith’s remorse, as he had spent two years in jail pleading insanity before being acquitted on those grounds.
