Eleven individuals have been arrested following the tragic deaths of an entire family while vacationing in Turkey. The family, consisting of parents Cigdem Bocek, 27, and Servet, 38, along with their children Masal, three, and Kadir Muhammet, six, were found dead in their hotel room in Istanbul after falling severely ill. Initial suspicions of food poisoning have now shifted towards a pesticide allegedly used in the hotel to eliminate bedbugs.

The arrests include hotel staff at the Harbour Suites Old City Hotel where the family stayed. Authorities are investigating the potential involvement of aluminium phosphide, a potent pesticide commonly used for pest control, in the tragic incident. It is believed that the toxic substance may have reached the family’s room through the bathroom ventilation system, causing their untimely deaths.

Aluminium phosphide is a hazardous chemical known to be lethal if inhaled in significant quantities. Further scrutiny revealed that at least one employee of the pest control company responsible for the hotel’s treatment lacked the necessary certification.

As investigations continue, the hotel has been evacuated and sealed off for further examination. Law enforcement officers have gathered samples from various areas within the premises, including bedsheets, pillows, water bottles, and blankets. Additionally, belongings of two other guests, an Italian and a Moroccan tourist, were removed after they also exhibited symptoms of poisoning.

The Bocek family, hailing from Hamburg, Germany, arrived in Istanbul on November 9 for their holiday. Two days later, they sought medical attention due to symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and dizziness, following a day of sightseeing. Tragically, Cigdem and the children passed away shortly after, while Servet succumbed to the effects of the poisoning after six days in intensive care.

The investigation, spearheaded by Istanbul’s Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, has resulted in the detention of multiple individuals, including street food vendors. Samples from the vendors visited by the family have been analyzed by the Forensic Medicine Institute.

The grandfather of the deceased children, Mustafa Celik, expressed his intention to hold those accountable for the family’s tragedy. He emphasized his desire for the perpetrators to face severe consequences for their actions.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has assured that the authorities will thoroughly investigate the circumstances leading to the family’s demise. Toxicology tests on samples from the victims and the hotel are ongoing as the investigation into the Bocek family’s tragic deaths progresses.
