Labour Minister Peter Kyle has strongly criticized Nigel Farage, alleging that Reform UK is dealing with a Russia-related issue and accusing Farage of being inconsistent in his statements. Kyle claimed that there is a pattern within the party that aligns with Vladimir Putin’s viewpoints, especially after former Reform UK leader in Wales, Nathan Gill, was sentenced to over 10 years in prison for accepting Russian bribes.
During an interview on Sky News, Kyle emphasized that Reform UK faces a specific problem concerning Russia within its ranks. He pointed out Farage’s past expressions of admiration for Putin, highlighting his appearances on Russian TV networks and his defense of Putin’s actions. Kyle challenged Farage and Reform’s denial of these allegations, urging a closer examination of Farage’s statements and actions over the years.
Gill, a former UKIP and Brexit Party MEP, was recently convicted for accepting illegal payments from a figure linked to the Russian security services. This development has raised concerns about Russian influence within Reform UK, prompting calls for Farage to investigate the party’s ties to Russia.
Reform UK has defended itself, with head of policy Zia Yusuf distancing the party from Gill’s actions, labeling them as ancient history. The party maintains that Gill’s misconduct does not reflect the broader Reform UK community and its supporters.
Farage has faced ongoing scrutiny for his past remarks praising Putin and defending Russian actions, including comments on Ukraine and NATO. Despite facing criticism, Farage has clarified his stance on Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, asserting his belief in national sovereignty and condemning the invasion as immoral and unjustifiable.
The controversy surrounding Gill’s conviction has added pressure on Farage and Reform UK to address concerns about alleged pro-Russian sentiments within the party. The ongoing debate raises questions about political affiliations and attitudes toward international relations with Russia.
