An expert from British Gas has shared advice on how to address cold spots in your radiator using a simple tool that costs just 97p. If you notice cold spots, especially at the top of your radiator, or hear gurgling noises and experience slow heating, it’s likely due to trapped air that needs to be released through a process called bleeding.

To address this issue, you will need a radiator key, which can be purchased inexpensively from Screwfix. Before beginning the bleeding process, it’s essential to turn off your heating and ensure the radiator has cooled down to avoid any burns from hot water.

Prepare an old towel and container to catch the water that will be released during bleeding. Locate the small valve on the radiator and use the key to turn it anti-clockwise. Peter Knowles, a technical repair engineer at British Gas, advises to open the valve slightly until you hear a hissing sound, indicating trapped air is escaping. Once water starts coming out, collect it in the container, tighten the valve, and repeat the process for other radiators if necessary.

Avoid turning the valve too much to prevent lowering the boiler pressure excessively. If problems persist after bleeding the radiators, it may indicate a more complex issue requiring the assistance of a gas safe registered engineer.

In related advice, British Gas smart energy engineer Jessica Rawstron suggests keeping your oven door open after cooking to utilize the remaining heat, helping to warm your kitchen and save energy. Energy bills have recently increased, with the average household paying approximately £1,758 per year for gas and electricity. The price cap sets limits on unit rates and standing charges but does not cap the total amount paid for energy, which depends on usage. Pre-payment meter customers now face a yearly charge of £1,711, while those paying upon receipt of the bill can expect to pay around £1,894 annually.
