I recently returned from providing essential support to first responders and labor union members in the Donbas area of Ukraine. Despite facing daily challenges like power outages and missile attacks resulting in civilian casualties, Ukrainians exhibit remarkable resilience. While they desire peace, they are steadfast in safeguarding their nation from Russian influence and the harsh realities of occupation.

During my visit to the Save Ukraine center, I encountered children rescued from the occupied regions, revealing distressing statistics of child abuse, with approximately one in ten children having experienced such trauma. The figure of over 20,000 children reported as abducted by Russia likely underestimates the actual scale of child abuse occurring in the region.

The situation is further complicated by Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich’s reluctance to transfer £2.5 billion from the Chelsea FC sale to aid Ukraine, as he engages in legal disputes over frozen assets in Jersey with the help of a member of the Conservative Shadow Cabinet, Lord Wolfson KC. This partnership raises concerns about the normalization of dealings with sanctioned oligarchs like Abramovich, who has close ties to Putin.

The involvement of Lord Wolfson and former Trump adviser Eric Herschmann in Abramovich’s legal battles underscores a troubling trend of accommodating Russian oligarchs. This development is particularly alarming amidst ongoing humanitarian crises in Ukraine, emphasizing the need for accountability in such high-profile legal matters.

The failure to address concerns regarding Lord Wolfson’s representation of a sanctioned oligarch reflects poorly on the leadership under Kemi Badenoch. Upholding democratic values necessitates holding individuals and institutions accountable for such actions.

The Labour government is urged to take decisive action by enacting emergency measures to prevent sanctioned oligarchs from exploiting the UK legal system and allocating the nearly £30 billion in frozen Russian assets in the UK to support Ukraine. With Ukraine at the forefront of the fight for democracy, it is crucial for the international community to show solidarity and support their cause.
