A tragic incident occurred where a five-year-old child lost his life after his uncle attempted to drive around a train barricade. The train collided with the car carrying Fabian Riojas, 24, and Emilio Martinez, five, sending the vehicle 300 yards down the road.

Riojas was hospitalized following the crash, while Emilio succumbed to his injuries on November 19 in Texas. Official records indicate that Riojas has been charged with vehicular manslaughter. Emilio’s father, Jon, expressed his sorrow, stating that his brother’s attempt to outpace the train failed, leading to the devastating outcome.

Jon pleaded for understanding and forgiveness, emphasizing that his brother deeply cared for Emilio. He believes dropping the charges against his brother would be appropriate, as he considers the incident a regrettable mistake. He highlighted his son’s love for his uncle and his belief that his uncle would have sacrificed himself to protect Emilio if given the chance.

Tracy Carter, a safety official, labeled the incident as “preventable.” Carter emphasized the importance of adhering to safety measures at train crossings and urged drivers to exercise caution rather than rushing to avoid accidents. He stressed the significance of taking extra time to ensure safety when approaching railroad crossings.

Recent survey results revealed concerns among adults regarding road safety, with a significant percentage feeling that local streets are unsafe. The survey, conducted by Slater and Gordon, indicated a growing perception of increased danger on roads over the past year. The findings underscore the pressing need for changes to address dangerous driving behaviors and improve road safety.

Matthew Tomlinson from Slater and Gordon emphasized the prevalence of dangerous driving incidents and the severe consequences they bring. He called for collective efforts to enhance road safety through improved infrastructure, stricter enforcement, and responsible driving practices. Road Safety Week serves as a reminder for everyone to contribute to creating safer streets and preventing tragic incidents caused by reckless driving.
