As a dedicated social worker with years of experience, I have witnessed the challenges faced by my colleagues in public services under the current administration. Despite being in power for over a year, the Labour government has not improved the situation for us.

Our wages have been continuously reduced while the cost of living continues to rise, putting us in financial strain. Furthermore, essential services that were once integral to our communities have been systematically dismantled by politicians, impacting the lives of ordinary people.

Having worked within a local authority for my entire career, I have seen firsthand the detrimental effects of budget cuts. Local authorities have been stripped of assets, with billions of pounds sold off since 2010. In my hometown of Bolton, council funding has been slashed by more than a quarter in the same period, directly affecting the quality of services provided to the public.

The Labour party, despite its promises of national renewal, has failed to reverse this trend. To truly represent the working class, Labour needs to prioritize the majority’s well-being over other interests. Addressing the rising cost of living requires concrete plans to increase wages and lower expenses for the working class.

To demonstrate commitment to public workers, the Prime Minister should consider providing inflation-proof pay raises and introducing policies like the Employment Rights Bill 2.0 to support collective bargaining across sectors. As the UNISON general secretary, my primary focus is on advocating for the working class and enhancing their livelihoods.

Investing in essential public services should take precedence over unnecessary expenditures on warfare. By prioritizing the needs of the working class, Labour can make a meaningful impact on people’s lives and challenge opposing political forces.

It is crucial to address pressing issues such as the incarceration of individuals protesting against injustices. The government’s actions, both domestically and internationally, must align with principles of justice and respect for human rights.

In conclusion, Labour must realign its priorities to serve the interests of the working class and lead by example in promoting social justice and equality.
