In my role as Policing Minister, I committed to combatting knife crime and enhancing public safety. One year later, we are making significant progress towards fulfilling that pledge.

Incidents of knife crime are on the decline, lives are being safeguarded, and communities are becoming more secure thanks to proactive measures implemented by the Home Office and law enforcement agencies.

This past year has been defined by tangible outcomes rather than mere rhetoric. Strategic enforcement and prevention efforts in areas where residents have faced the threat of knife robberies have led to a remarkable reduction in such crimes.

The establishment of a specialized anti-knife robbery task force across seven high-incidence regions has contributed to a 15% decrease in these offenses since June 2024, equating to nearly 2,500 fewer incidents. Data-driven policing strategies are effectively shielding communities and preempting violence.

Our successful County Lines Programme has yielded unprecedented results. These illicit drug networks, which fuel knife-related crimes and ensnare vulnerable youths in criminal activities, have been dismantled in the thousands.

Since July 2024, over 3,000 drug distribution lines have been shut down, resulting in more than 8,200 arrests, including charging 1,600 line operators, and the seizure of around 1,000 knives. These figures translate into tangible impacts: over 4,300 at-risk individuals referred for protection services and over 600 children supported by the Catch22 program we sponsor.

These young individuals are breaking free from exploitation and forging safer paths forward. The effects are evident, with a 25% reduction in hospital admissions for stabbing incidents in areas with high drug trafficking rates, amounting to 840 fewer victims.

Instances of drug misuse-related hospitalizations have also notably decreased. These statistics signify spared families from anguish and communities infused with optimism. Such progress is a result of deliberate planning and evidence-based strategies.

Through initiatives like knife surrender programs, we provided individuals seeking an exit from knife-carrying lifestyles a channel to relinquish their weapons, resulting in the removal of nearly 60,000 knives from circulation. Our innovative Hex mapping technology is pinpointing localized knife crime hotspots, facilitating more targeted policing interventions in collaboration with local stakeholders.

Violence Reduction Units are actively engaging with families and schools to steer youth away from criminal paths, while more than 50 Young Futures Panel trials are intervening proactively to safeguard those most at risk.

Furthermore, we have heeded the voices of those directly impacted by these heinous crimes. Ronan’s Law, championed by Pooja Kanda following the tragic loss of her son Ronan to a stabbing incident in 2022, has heightened penalties for offenders and safeguards for victims, reaffirming a zero-tolerance stance towards knife crime.

Stricter age verification protocols for online knife transactions are closing exploitable loopholes, and we are exploring the implementation of a licensing framework to impede criminal and underage knife purchases.

The battle against knife crime continues, but the past year demonstrates the potential when government, law enforcement, and communities collaborate. Each surrendered knife, each closed County Line, and each safeguarded child represents saved lives and secured futures.

We have reversed the upward trend of knife crime into a downward trajectory—and our efforts will persist until serious violence is eradicated from our communities, ensuring every young person has the opportunity for a safer future.
