Mike Pence, the former Vice President under Donald Trump, criticized the US President for his defense of the Saudi Crown Prince in connection to the killing of Jamal Khashoggi, a journalist based in the US. This criticism arose after Trump publicly supported Mohammed Bin Salman, despite findings by the CIA implicating the Prince in Khashoggi’s brutal murder and dismemberment.

During Salman’s visit to the White House, Trump made statements minimizing the incident, claiming that Salman had no knowledge of the murder. Pence, speaking at the Chatham House Think Tank in London, distanced himself from Trump’s remarks, stating that he would not have made such a statement and emphasizing the importance of the US-Saudi relationship moving forward.

Khashoggi went missing after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2, 2018, reportedly for wedding document purposes. Turkish authorities discovered evidence of his murder and subsequent tampering with the crime scene, leading the UN to hold the Saudi state responsible for his “premeditated extrajudicial execution.”

In response to questions about the murder, Trump rebuked the reporter, labeling the inquiry as “insubordinate” and threatening to revoke ABC’s broadcasting license. Salman acknowledged the incident as a “huge mistake” and assured efforts to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
