An innovative glass structure has been designed to provide shelter for mountaineers facing challenges at high altitudes. This unique camp, created by Italian design firm CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati in partnership with Salone del Mobile.Milano, will be exhibited in Milan before being transported by air to its final location in the Alps for the 2026 Winter Olympics.
The visually striking bivouac was developed to blend seamlessly with the Alpine surroundings, starting with a 3D scan of the region’s rock formations. According to Carlo Ratti, co-founder of CRA, the goal was to create a structure that integrates harmoniously with the natural environment, in contrast to the typical obtrusive bivouac designs commonly seen in the area.
CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati emphasizes that the design not only reduces visual impact but also maximizes functionality by incorporating features such as energy generation, storage capabilities, and water harvesting through air condensation.
Maria Porro, president of Salone del Mobile.Milano, described the project as a manifestation of research aligned with nature, symbolizing principles of circular and responsible design as the structure transitions from Milan to the Alps.
Carlo Ratti further explained the design philosophy by referencing the words of renowned Italian architect Gio Ponti, likening architecture to a crystal. Utilizing digital fabrication techniques, the bivouac was crafted to mimic the natural rock formations that define the Alpine landscape.
