A man who was convicted of raping and murdering his manager at a convenience store in Florida back in 1988 was executed on Thursday. Richard Barry Randolph, 63, was found guilty of the brutal crimes against Minnie Ruth McCollum, the convenience store manager, during a robbery attempt at the store where he used to work. Randolph was 27 years old at the time of the incident.
Following his conviction in 1989 for murder, armed robbery, sexual battery, and grand theft, Randolph was sentenced to death. Thirty-seven years later, he was put to death by lethal injection by the Florida Department of Corrections. The execution proceeded without any complications, and Randolph did not make a final statement before his death.
Court records reveal that in August 1988, Randolph tried to break into the safe at a convenience store in Palatka, where he was caught by McCollum. A struggle ensued between them, leading to Randolph brutally attacking McCollum before fleeing with her car. Despite being discovered alive by authorities, McCollum succumbed to severe brain injuries six days later.
Randolph was apprehended shortly after the incident while attempting to borrow money and redeem lottery tickets stolen from the store. He confessed to the crimes and directed police to evidence he had discarded. Despite his appeals, both the Florida Supreme Court and the U.S. Supreme Court upheld his conviction and sentence, leading to his execution.
