Mikey Smith, the Deputy Political Editor for the Mirror (Sunday) based in Westminster, witnessed the conclusion of Donald Trump’s second state visit as Marine One departed from the Chequers lawn under a sunny sky.

Throughout the day, Downing Street aides closely monitored the weather, unsure if the scheduled Red Devils parachute display would proceed due to looming grey skies. Despite concerns of rain, which had already led to a relocation of an outdoor press conference, the downpour never materialized.

The subsequent press conference, held indoors, maintained a sense of unpredictability but managed to stay on track. Trump’s arrival at Chequers, the Prime Minister’s historic estate, was observed from a distance as he watched the Red Devils’ aerial performance alongside Melania, Keir, and Lady Starmer.

Following the spectacle, journalists from both US and UK media outlets gathered in a grand chamber adorned with oil paintings. Trump’s administration members, known for their controversial reputation, caused confusion among UK journalists by applauding at the start and end of the event – a gesture uncommon in press interactions.

Despite a few tense moments, including Trump’s denial of knowing Peter Mandelson and an extensive discussion on Biden’s autopen, the press conference and the state visit concluded without major incidents. Given recent events, the smooth outcome was unexpected for Keir Starmer.
