Harry Skelton was visibly moved by Grey Dawning’s impressive victory in the prestigious £200,000 Betfair Chase at Haydock. The highlight race of the day evolved into a thrilling showdown between last year’s top two contenders, with Handstands also in close contention.

Despite being defeated by Royale Pagaille a year ago, Grey Dawning dominated the race in the final stretch, pulling away by two-and-three-quarter lengths ahead of its old rival. Skelton, almost in tears, delivered a stellar performance just days after welcoming his daughter Anna with wife Bridget.

Reflecting on the win, Skelton expressed his gratitude towards Clare, Tom Messenger, and the team for preparing Grey Dawning effectively. He mentioned the recent birth of his daughter Anna, emphasizing his pride in Bridget and his eagerness to return home.

Acknowledging the emotional rollercoaster of recent events, Skelton highlighted the significance of family well-being. He praised the team’s efforts in maintaining the horses’ peak performance, noting the joy of achieving success on the field.

The significant victory contributed £113,870 to Dan Skelton’s leading prize money total in the trainers’ standings, exceeding £1.2 million since April. Dan Skelton was impressed by Grey Dawning’s remarkable performance and expressed satisfaction in finally witnessing the anticipated success, delayed by adverse weather conditions last year.

Harry Skelton’s emotional reaction was attributed to the whirlwind 48 hours he had experienced. He dedicated the win to owner Robert Kirkland, emphasizing the importance of owners in the sport and the joy of delivering memorable moments to them.
